Report: 44 died in Tupolev air crash near Petrozavodsk

44 people died in a plane crash that occurred Monday night in northwestern Russia.

A RusAir Tu-134 airplane attempted an emergency landing on a highway in northern Karelia republic, said Tuesday morning a spokesman for the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry, quoted by Ria Novosti.

The airplane flew from Moscow to Petrozavodsk and crash landed one kilometer away from the destination airport where supposed to arrive at 0.04 a.m. Moscow time.
The aircraft, a Tu-134 caught fire on landing.
Shortly after the crash which is thought to have occured in a dense fog, the aircraft was overwhelmed by flames.
“According to latest information, 52 people were aboard the doomed plane, 44 people were killed and eight injured,” said the spokesman. Previous reports showed that the plane was carrying 43 passengers, including eight children and five crew members. Among those killed in plane crash there was an international football referee, and eight foreigners, including four members of same family with dual citizenship, Russian and American. Among the survivors there was a 19-year-old young man.”
Various possible causes of the accident are being studied at this time, including human factors, said a spokesman for Russian investigation committee, Vladimir Markin, adding that an investigation the accident has already been launched.
Rescuers who are known to have arrived quickly at the disaster scene, found already the aircraft black boxes.
Tu-134 aircraft was launched in 1967, as passenger plane used widely in the former Soviet Union. The plane has capacity to carry 76 passengers.
