Tsunami alert in New Zealand after 7.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Pacific

A 7.8 magnitude tremor occurred on Thursday morning (Wednesday evening GMT) in the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake occurred close to Kermandec islands, the tsunami alert issued for New Zealand and Tonga, according to USGS.

According to the USGS, the earthquake took place on Thursday at 7.03 local time (Wednesday, 22.03, GMT), 200 kilometers east of Raoul Island, part of Kermadec Archipelago, at a depth of about 50 kilometers.

Kermandec Islands is about 900 kilometers from New Zealand.
