Romanian journalist Cristina Verona commits murder then suicide

Life story of journalist who killed her mother. Crime report.

Journalist Cristina Verona commited suicide after allegedly killing her mother

Cristina Verona,  44, a journalist living in Bucharest’s Spring District (Cartierul Primaverii) killed her mother and subsequently committed suicide around July 1, 2011. That’s a horrible crime behind which lies the story of a woman who accomplished her professional/career dreams, but had a totally unsatisfactory personal life.

Career and personal life: Former journalist and communications expert but also former chief editor of Elle and Reader’s Digest magazines, Verona was a woman appreciated by anyone because of the proven professionalism.

Her career has been over the years in continuous ascension and she took over important leading positions such as editor of Sale & Pepe Romania magazine, PR for Graffiti BBDO Advertising and public relations officer for The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Graffiti BBDO Advertising representatives have confirmed information that Cristina Verona worked for advertiser. “She has been employed here for the past 15 years,” the representatives told Adevarul.

Despite an enviable career, the killer had little to brag about personal life: she had no children and was divorced.

“Cristina Verona was married to Matei Radu Verona (the son of  famous architect Gheorghe Verona) who was doing business with gasoline. Shortly after she married, she moved to Primaverii neighborhood and began driving the nicest cars,” journalist Horia Tabacu told the Evenimentul Zilei.

“We met her in early ’90s in foreign press correspondents environment established in Romania. She was working for them and seemed to be part of a foreign news agency. To be accepted for such a job it was compulsory to “handle” a few foreign languges and speaking well at least two of them. There were two options to be successful in such a job: either you were supposed to be a good journalist, to look impartially and to summarize events or to have an affair. She was part of the first category.”

Her husband was the son of famous architects and was doing business with petrol. He was also rich because soon, Cristina began to drive the most beautiful cars in Bucharest. Convertible masterpieces or tuned jeeps. At the same time she moved into an apartment on Spring (Primaverii) Street. Located on the first floor of a recently contructed building, her appartement was something that anyone in Bucharest would have dreamt. Bucharest fancy and best area, large living area, dining room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and especially a new construction,” added Horia Tabacu.

Husband’s wealth and Cristina’s intellectual abilities seemed not to be compatible, and the journalist became again a single woman, following a 2006 divorce. Although many blame for the committed crime possible mental problems arising from an atypical life style, her friends disagree.

For example, Horia Tabacu said about Cristina Verona that she always looked like “highly trained person and slightly snobbish.”

“The problems related to psychiatric disorders are out of discussion.” This confirms one of her best friends, Alison Mutler from Associated Press. who spoke with Cristina recently. Same Alison revealed that Miss. Verona was very close to hes mother and is unlikely that between them have been a major conflict.
Identity troubles? However former spouse said that Cristina was behaving strange in the last period and several neighbors along with investigators confirmed the hypothesis. It seems that in recent months Cristina Verona has filed several complaints to police against her neighbors who would have enhanced the water and gas bills improperly. Furthermore on June 30 she went to a Police Department to complain (not clearly yet) that either a neighbor stole her identity or having troubles with Bora Bahadir Cokyapici-the owner of Osho restaurant located on Primaverii. She was agitated and had no patience to write a declaration, the police officer registering only a short report.

Cristina Verona was found dead in one of her house rooms, hanging by the heater and her mother Elena Parvulescu, 77, was lying naked and dead (asphyxiated) in the bathroom. At the moment the investigators believe the daughter commited suicide after suffocating her mother with a pillow.

The chain of events becomes even more puzzling: On 29 June at 18.01, so with just 24 hours before her death (June 6 autopsy showed that the bodies were lifeless for nearly 5 days), Cristina changed her status on Facebook from “single” to “in a relationship”. “Why would a 44-year-old woman commit suicide or kill her mother just hours after officially announcing that she is in a relationship?” an old friend told the reporter. Some other close friends believe that an involvement in the crime scenario might have one of her former lovers originating from Saudi Arabia. Cristina was last seen on June 30, 2011. She did not leave behind any farewell message. However the story turns out to be complicated and police investigation is still ongoing.

This is not true. Cristina would NEVER have killed her mother. I spoke with her days before and she said she feared for her life that they were after her.
Some man had abused her and made her do bad things.
What proof do you have before you write such horrible news. I think there was a set up.

With all respect but the story depicted here relies on reports from romanian newspapers. If you know more than that you can also address to police investigators. The crime is quite puzzling and everyone comes up with various stories, oppinions. It will take some time till the mistery will be solved (if ever would).

Ask you r questions here . there is a killer out there like who killed Cristina and her mother.

        • azot says:

          Jon,

I am sure you are right. The man in this case can be only one. The jealous Bora. Once hi did beat her close to death and in the days before she was killed she was struggling with him badly. How close do you know her? We can not have a chat on this forum which is open so why don’t you write to me?

I’d like to know who wrote/translated this article. The structure is terrible… sounds just like the Romanian syntax, not English. And so many misspelled words! It makes me cringe.

    • foxcrawl says:

sending a copy with your own version/translation is always welcome.
The professionals should usually pay more attention on the misspellings. This is just a pers. blog (a hobby not really a job)

I cannot believe Cristina would do this! I knew her through our mutual love of the Lipizzanner horse. All I can do is pray for her and her mother – that they are finally at rest. I am so sorry Cristina over whatever evil brought you to this end, but I cannot believe it was by your own hand! I cannot imagine what torment would have led you to that place. The Cristina I knew was an animal lover, a gentle considerate intelligent person. Nothing can change that evil has taken you from us, but I pray God had taken you into his rest.

Exactly, too bad the Romanian Police cant get their shit togeather.
Who could profit from Cristina’s demise?

Cristina never drank more than a glass of wine maybe once a week!!! water when she went out…ok they found loads of alcohol in her body…you really think..she would have been strong enough to sufocate her mother and have the coordination and skills to hang herself from the heater.?….sure……so her lover boyfriend/neighbour as well ,never noticed she did not show up at his restaurant inaugration(200meters away)? did not miss her for four days??and did not smell her…? or did he call after 5 days ..?
.actually he was in a great incredible mood tuesday at midday..”im great iv never been better” he said
    she was NOT crazy
    she adored her mother
    she was religious
    she was intelligent

she didnt need to “brag” about not having kids or being single you are ridiculous so measure your comments to someone who cannot defend herself

    • foxcrawl says:

it looks like police said they found alcohol in her body (0.085%) and her mother’s as well (0.23%). Autopsy report at antena3.ro

      • azot says:

Cristina was “drunken” for sure. The way the police acts is like they just have no interest in revealing the real face of the real killer.
Why? Look at registry of commerce on the guy from OSHO, listen to other peoples and make a deep search on a trivial search engine such as Google and you will start to understand.

Jon: It has been a year; I am in the US and have not heard if there have been any developements in the investigation of Cristina’s death. I think of her often; a year hasn’t lessened the shock of her death and the ‘alleged circumstances’ of it. I hope that something has been brought to light to clear her name and allow her to rest in peace.
Could you bring me up to date?
