A few points to the story you are missing:

-no universal health insurance proposed in the US recently included Dental insurance.

-most countries that do have universal health insurance either do not cover dental services or have such a scarcity of dentists that routine dental care is impossible (see the U.K.)

-since the deceased saw a physician in the ER, lack of heath insurance is a strawman.

-many large pharmacies in the US (Wal-Mart, Rite-Aid, etc.) have free or vastly discounted antiboitics as a loss-leader. My local Supermarket chain gives them out free. Someone else called a Wal-Mart in Cincinnati and found most anti-biotics could be bought for $4.

-the man had relatives (who are making a big stink now) that could have easily afforded to buy the meds for him.

-and the University of Cincinnati Dental school has a FREE DENTAL CLINIC. They treat all patients, regardless of ability to pay.

-finally, he didn’t lose his life because of a tooth, he lost his life because of very poor decision.

      Hi TomB.
Indeed you are perfectly right. That’s true that the basic insurance does not cover the dentist services which are….exagerately expensive. In some countries from Eastern Europe the dental service show just regular and affordable prices while in West EU and maybe US the rates are swollen.
      Cheers.
