Protesters in University Square forced the safety cords and threw firing bottles, pieces of rocks between fences and protesters. Two journalists caught fire and several people were injured in the rain of stones. Two women fainted, and one policeman suffered a head injury.

Romanian riot police strongly intervened with tear gas. The law enforcement forces had to regroup in order to prevent another attack and warned the 2000 protesters to leave the riot area. Several young men were detained and stuffed into the vans of the police.

The Romanian turmoil is covered by different television channels like “Pro tv”, “Antena 3”, “Realitatea TV” or “Antena 1”. They are broadcasting live from across the capital city.

These protests turned out to be an ideal occassion for dozens hooligans who improvised barricades and set several fires near “Unirii” metro station. The aggressors set a shop in the center of the capital on fire and overthrew newsstands. The attacks on policemen went on even more violently. Agitators used torches, firecrackers and hurled stones. Meanwhile, the rally at the University Square went on peacefully.

Romania’s revolts stemmed from a scandal related to the resignation of Raed Arafat, the Secretary of State for Health who quit the executive after having conflicting opinions with the government members over the healthcare reform. The protests, aimed at supporting Raed Arafat, were initiated on the social network Facebook.

The demonstrations organized over the weekend and directed against President Traian Basescu were held also in other cities across the country such as Galati, Alba Iulia, Sibiu, Iasi, Brasov, Timisoara, Bacau, Vaslui, Piatra Neamt, Ploiesti, Pitesti, Arad, Hunedoara, Resita, Slobozia, Craiova , Deva, Turnu Severin, Satu Mare, Braila and Focsani.

Hooligans destroyed a shop of a mobile phone company downtown Bucharest and stole more goods. They also vandalized a house pawn.

Protesters who intended to go home, had to avoid the Union Square (Piata Unirii) as the place was protected by groups of gendarmes who forbade anyone’s access into the respective area.

      Simon, I read everywhere that Romanian people wanna get rid of the president, government, etc,,,but I have not seen so far one single thing: who should take over the power if the current ledership is ousted???
      Indeed the rioters go into the street asking for resignation, punshment, etc but do they really know who the best is now to lead Romania? I am quite puzzled into this aspect…

        As I posted several months ago: “ScumBăsescu is the weakest and incompetent president throughout history of Romania”!
        Yes, there are solutions, Social-Liberal Union (USL) are one of them.
        But unfortunately we can not get rid of the P.D.L. (The Major Clan full of corruption in all cities). ScumBăsescu created in (with) the PDL, a dangerous communist octopus party hard to stop from the many abuses and serious deviations from democracy.
        We need to get rid of the Orange Plague (PDL) as soon as possible, otherwise 90% of the Romanian people will be social & economic finished !!! 🙁

        • foxcrawl says:

          hmmm,,but a few years ago people said the same about social democrats,,,in conclusion Romania is in a kind of closed loop without exit. practically the power is shared between PDL-PSL and tragically there is no solution because anyone appear to be corrupt.

          • Simon says:

            Trust me, the PDL Plague from today is the most bloody nightmare of Romania !!!
            It is the most corrupted and anti social party in history, is even more insidious and perverse than PCR, I mean this Goverment defy u in face of any right… they let u die in the street like a stray dog… ScumBăsescu & PDL are horrible, terrible, destructive and evil !!! 🙁

    This is what happens in Pitesti a city 100Km from Bucharest.
    Down With ScumBasescu!!!

    • foxcrawl says:

      how comes? I watched the videos captured in Pitesti (posted by someone in another article) and everthing seemed to be fine there. The police was just directing the traffic in Pitesti, no sign of violence. Sorry, but sometimes there is also manipulation.

      • Simon says:

        I hardly think that this person from Piteşti he’s/she’s right !
        In Bucharest, the Gendarmes have shown a horrible cruelty:
        – they beat anyone at random from all downtown streets;
        – they hit hard with their brutal war boots even elderly people;
        – they do not take care that those civilians on the streets are not protesters (just simple passes), they assaulted everyone, even fallen citizens to the ground;
        – they have violated human rights, freedom of movement and speech, basic and essential rights for a Member State of the E.U.
