A Greek newspaper published a photo of German Chancellor Angela Merkel who features a Nazi outfit with the text “Memorandum macht frei” (“Memorandum shall make you free”), a reference to a Nazi slogan and an agreement required recently for a new Greek loan, writes Financial Times.

Anti-German feelings seem to be increasingly widespread in Greece, amid harsh austerity measures required by the Trio consisting of EC, ECB and IMF. “Accusations against Germany are rooted in the suffering endured by the Greeks in the period 1941-1944, during the Nazi occupation. But that’s not the only problem: Greece is overwhelmed by poor economic management, public sector corruption and political failures and that should rather lead to a self-critical attitude than blaming Germany” notes the FT.

“However, critics and hatred against Germany’s policies in the context of euro area crisis appear weekly in the Greek press and on TV,” said the financial publication.
