At least 350 inmates died after a fire broke out at a prison in Comayagua, Honduras. Almost half of the detainees died burned alive in the violent blaze that swept the prison facility over night. The inmates were trapped in their cells and apparently no one could intervene in time to release them (scroll down for videos and photo).
The death toll showed 357 deaths in the context in which the prison inmates numbered 851. Their families gathered outside the prison waiting for information. Only 35 people were transported to the hospital.
It is still unknown what caused the fire. It could have been a shortcircuit, but the possibility that an inmate set a matress on fire is not ruled out.
