Inspired by Muamba, leukaemia-hit Stiliyan Petrov greeted, thanked Aston Villa fans

Bulgarian footballer and Aston Villa’s captain Stiliyan Petrov was diagnosed with acute leukaemia, the club announced on Friday. “I will retire from football, this is the end. I have to fight for my life,” Petrov told Bulgarian media.

During Saturday’s championship match between Aston Villa – Chelsea (2-4), Stilian Petrov received one minute of applause from the entire stadium: it was the 19th minute (his t-shirt number) when arena started to applaud as a sign of support to the captain in sufferance.

As of Monday, Petrov will start the treatment against leukemia: the disease was discovered after the last game of the championship, when the player felt a sudden febrile condition. At the suggestion of team’s doctor, Petrov was changed and subsequently he had several medical tests, which diagnosed him with leukemia. “I saw the photograph published yesterday by my young colleague Fabrice Muamba and I think only at his example and all the support I received in the last hours,” said Stiliyan Petrov, referring to the miraculous recovery of Muamba who suffered a heart attack and stood in clinical death for 78 minutes! Friday, Muamba’s family released a photograph portraying the player smiling in hospital.
