Nepal man fatally shoots son after confusing him with monkey

A farmer in Nepal shot his 12-yeal-old son dead after mistaking him for a monkey trying to steal his crops on Friday.

Chitra Bahadur Pulami climbed to scare the macaques that had turned into an ordeal to the family but 55-year-old dad Gupta Bahadur targgeted the child and fired his gun, wrongly confusing him to be one of the monkeys.

“The son was hiding in a tree at their farm to chase away monkeys that used to come searching for food in the maize field,” said Arun Poudel, a police deputy in the remote Arghakhanchi district.

“The son died on the incident site after Gupta Bahadur mistakenly thought there was a monkey in the tree and opened fire. Our preliminary investigation shows that the father was unaware that his son had gone to the maize field to chase the monkeys.

There are 3 species of monkey specific to Nepal, the rhesus and Assamese macaque and the common langur. These monkeys are regarded as sacred and farmers only try to scare them away from their crops without killing or wounding the animals.

“I figured out my terrible mistake only when my boy fell down and remained hung in one of the tree’s branches,” the father told police.
