The hope of the Austrian skiing Björn Sieber died Friday in a traffic accident near his home in the Alps, according to police in Vorarlberg region.

Sieber was due to participate in the giant slalom in Sölden, which kicked off the (World Cup) alpine skiing season on Saturday.

The minibus carrying Bjorn and his brother fell more than 70 meters down a slope after leaving the roadway in efforts to avoid a car coming from the opposite direction. Some other reports claim the minibus was passing a parked vehicle on a narrow lane when it veered off road and rolled down the slope.

Police revealed that the two did not wear seatbelt. Brother’s skier was seriously injured and officers have not determined yet who was actually driving the vehicle.

Björn Sieber was part of the Austrian team in 2006. He disputed 18 rounds at the World Cup and his best rank was 7 in the super combined in Bansk, Bulgaria, in February 2011.
