It might be hard to believe but the Italian cities’ air hides traces of cocaine and marijuana.

Researchers at the Institute for Atmospheric Pollution in Italy have published the results of an 1-year-long study carried out in 8 of country’s major cities: Turin, Bologna, Rome, Verona, Florence, Naples, Milan and Palermo. They monitored air’s psychotropic substances and their findings are stunning.

Traces of marijuana and cocaine were found in the air of all cities monitored, along with nicotine and caffeine.

The concentration are however very small and can not affect people, researchers say. On the other hand, their study shows the important trends in drug use: Turin, the most attractive center for cocaine, Florence – a magnet for marijuana.

Thus, the results of the research will be used by the Italian police.

In America, a study aiming at monitoring water’s quality, showed traces of drugs and hormones in drinking water supplies.
