Beidou system, which currently relies on a network of 16 navigation satellites and four other experimental, began to operate for public and commercial services on Thursday, Chinese official media said on Friday.

Ran Chengqi, spokesman for China’s Bureau of Satellite Navigation, believes that Beidou system’s performance is “comparable” to the American GPS system, reports China Daily.

“The signal sent by Beidou can be received also in Australia,” added Chengqi.

The launch of Beidou system which is seen as “the second generation” of China’s navigation systems, represent a new success for Chinese space technology.

Expansion of Chinese satellites includes the launch of some other 40 additional satellites by the year 2024. According to Chinese authorities, as of 2020 this system will provide global coverage.

In 2020, satellite navigation market is estimated to reach a 500 billion dollars turnover, and Beidou system’s developers hope to gain 70% to 80% of this market, if users opt for compatible devices with multiple services, not just one, like now.

China began placing its own satellite navigation network in 2000 to avoid a strategic dependency – especially military – to the American GPS system, which currently holds 95% of the market.
For China, says Australian space expert Morris Jones, the utility of Beidou is first and foremost a military one.
