An Indian female teenager, victim of a gang rape, committed suicide after a police officer tried to persuade her to withdraw the complaint and marry one of the rapists, according to police and relatives. It is the second case of gang rape recently that stirs heated debate in India. Hundreds of people have started a general revolt in the last days accusing authorities for not making efforts to prevent such attacks and punish more severely the rapists.

The 17-year-old girl swallowed a poisoning substance and was found dead on Wednesday evening. Her suicide emerged shortly after the occurrence of another gang rape of a female student on a bus in New Delhi on December 16, which caused a wave of indignation in India. The teenager who committed suicide was raped by a group, on 13 November, during a Diwali festival in Patiala region of the northern state of Punjab. A police officer was fired and another suspended for bad management of this case, local authorities said.

The girl tried “to do everything in her power to register her complaint,” but police have not opened a formal investigation, said inspector general Paramjit Singh Gill, the chief of regional police chief. “One of the police officers tried to convince her to retract the complaint,” he added.

The victim’s sister told Indian television channel NDTV that local police have gone too far. “Police began to exert pressure on her to accept a financial arrangement with rapists or to marry one of them,” said victim’s sister.

Two of the alleged rapists (Balwinder Singh and Gurpreet Singh) and woman ( Shinderpal Kaur) suspected of being their accomplice were arrested on Thursday, Patiala police said.
