A cheap and convenient means of transportation: cycling is beneficial, but what do you do when you are in a hurry? Romanian Raul Oaida solved this problem after developing a jet engine capable of propelling his bicycle at a speed up to 41 km per hour on a straight road.

This appears to be the first Romanian jet engine in the last century – since Henri Coanda.

When aged 15, Oaida built a steam engine, which was awarded in a school competition. The success prompted him to make another plan. A jet-engine propelled bike. Raul Oaida has been working for 3 years to make his invention come true. He designed himself every components. Initially in a simple manner, then increasingly more complicated. He read, learned, and made use of several books found on the Internet. For about one year, Oaida has spent savings and money received from parents at Easter and Christmas on his turbo mountain bike.

The overall cost of the jet engine amounted to € 5,000. He received much of the amount from people who were surprised by his project after founding him on Internet.

The first sponsorship came from ARCA (Aeronautics and Cosmonautics Romanian Association), a non-profit organization running the Romanian Space Programme (2012-2025) and whose objective is the exploration and colonization of space.

Oaida’s engine weighs 5 kg and is made of duralumin, stainless steel, titanium and some alloys.
“The first jet engine weighed a ton and was very big. Mine is as big as a notebook and works like a Swiss watch,” says the inventor, explaining that he does not directly control the engine, but by a computer which picks up signals, analyzes them and then provides the necessary commands.

“If you try to manually start a jet engine, you can destroy it. A computer does what a human operator could never do. 20 years ago, this computer was as big as a refrigerator and cost 100,000 euros. My computer is the size of a matchbox and costs 200 euros. Technology said its word,” explains the young inventor.

The jet engine operates on a mixture of petrol, diesel and synthetic oil.
“Specifically: 4 parts diesel, one part gasoline (benzine) and 2 percent synthetic oil. That’s equivalent to kerosene which is difficult to find, and in case you are lucky enough, then you have to buy large quantities. At maximum speed – i.e, 93,000 rev / min (RPM), the engine consumes one liter per minute,” said Oaida for local newspaper Hunedoreanul.
