According to a new study, if you want to be a more careful driver, you need to listen Coldplay and Norah Jones when sitting in your car. On the other side, researchers found out that Black Eyed Peas’s hit “Hey Mama” is the most dangerous for people behind the steering wheel.

It seems that rock music is not suitable as well, leading to a more dangerous behavior.

Eight participants, four women and four men were asked to drive 800km each – the first 400 km driving in silence and the rest (of 400 km) with music . During their journey, a mobile application, MotorMate, monitored their driving style, recording several parameters like speed, acceleration and braking, in order to analyze if music affects driving capabilities.

Dr Simon Moore, a psychologist at the University of London, identified various patterns in music genres leading to a more hazardous driving.

“Loud music increases the heart beat rate, therefore poses a danger for drivers. Rapid rhythms can cause excitation, and people seems to focus more on sound than road. Moreover, drivers speed up unconsciously, to fit their driving style with the musical rhythm” said Dr. Moore, who added that (even worse) if we listen to music we do not like, it is most likely to get distracted.”

According to experts, the optimal musical rhythm of a song should be similar to that of the heart, which is 60-80 beats per minute. Example of songs within this (safe) category are: “Come Away With Me” – Norah Jones, “The Scientist” – Coldplay and “Tiny Dancer” – Elton John.
