Vladimir Putin announced divorce from wife Lyudmila on live TV

Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a televised program today, that the marriage with his wife Lyudmila is over.

While in the studio of the state TV channel Russia24 on Thursday, Vladimir and Lyudmila Putin revealed their divorce after a marriage of 30 years. Putin and his wife have been married since 1983 and the couple have two daughters together.

Lyudmila told the station that the divorce will be a “civilized one” and that they “remain close friends” in the future.

According to RIA Novosti, just before the split announcement, the president and his wife attended a ballet performance in a rare public appearance together. It was the first time the presidential couple was seen in public since the inauguration of Putin’s third presidential term in May 2012.
