Human head transplant is possible, says Italian researcher Sergio Canavero

Attaching a human head to the body of another person is a medical procedure that is possible with the technique available today, says Italian scientist Sergio Canavero. Hence, cutting off your own head and placing it on somebody else’s body would no longer be a problem.

In a recently published paper, the neuroscientist Sergio Canavero mentioned that head transplantation has already been done successfully on animals.

The Italian claims that recent scientific discoveries would allow the reconnection of segments of the spinal bone that have been sectioned.

According to Canavero’s paper, “The greatest technical hurdle to [a head transplant] is of course the reconnection of the donor’s (D)’s and recipients (R)’s spinal cords. It is my contention that the technology only now exists for such linkage… Several up to now hopeless medical connections might benefit from such a procedure.”

The technique described by Canavero is similar to that used by Robert White, who in 1970 successfully transplanted the head of a rhesus monkeys on the body of another. First, both patients must be in the same operating room. Then, the head to be transplanted needs to be cooled down to a temperature of about 15 degrees Celsius. Proceeding as fast as possible, surgeons must remove both heads at the same time and then connect the “good one” to the circulatory system of the donor body.

Once this step is carried out, the heart of the donor body can be started again, and surgeons can reconnect also other vital system, including the spinal cord.
