Newly-found asteroid 2013 TV135 poses impact threat to Earth in 2032

Ukrainian Astronomers have spotted an asteroid of threatening dimensions that could collide with Earth in 2032, although the chances of an impact are slim, according to present calculations.

Asteroid 2013 TV135 was first observed last weekend from Ukraine (NASA)

The newly-discovered asteroid which was dubbed 2013 TV135, is 410-meter wide and was first noticed late the previous week from the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Ukraine, according to the International Astronomer Union’s Minor Planet Center.

Today , the finding was officially backed by 5 groups of astronomers in the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, and Russian-Siberian Republic of Buryatia.

2013 TV135 was ranked as a potential threat, an official label designated to space rocks whose orbits near Earth at less than 7.5 million km. The minimum approach between the orbit of 2013 TV135 and that of Earth is estimated at 1.7 million kilometers.

However, the asteroid has the odds of 63,000 to 1 of crashing into Earth on 26 August 2032, according to current predictions.

Scientists are gonna work harder to better assess the risk posed by the space body – and even localize a possible impact spot on Earth – in 2028, said Timur Kryachko of the Crimean Observatory in a statement for RIA Novosti today.

“Our industry space has an important mission to accomplish,” wrote on Twitter Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who represents Russia’s voice for efforts into developing anti-asteroid defense systems.

2013 TV135 received a rating of 1 out of 10 on the Torino scale, which estimates an asteroid crash disasters. There is only one more asteroid claiming the same rating , as the other celestial bodies show “almost zero ” impact risks, said NASA in a report.

A possible collision between Earth and 2013 TV135 would generate a blast whose is thought to equal the explosive power of 2,500 megatons of TNT – a power 50 times greater than the largest nuclear nuke ever triggered.

The detection of the new asteroid comes as another evidence to support and motivate efforts from the United States and Russia for developing asteroid defense plans. Representatives of the two superpower countries had discussions on the subject and established an agreement during a meeting in Vienna last month.

The hottest research is currently focused on choosing the suitable options for defending ourselves from the threatening near-Earth space rocks as three deflection methods appear to be viable and subjected to intensive debates.
