The spurious posts on Facebook seemed to originate from Fox News and CNN, and the singer’s death was announced under the title “RIP Celine Dion 1968 – 2013” (Rest in peace Celine Dion 1968-2013) and “Her heart will go on? Celine Dion died in a car accident “.

The CNN fake message read: “Hollywood Breaking News – R.I.P Celine Dion at about 11 a.m. ET on Sunday (20 October 2013), Celine Dion died in a plane crash. The culprit for the story is Global Associated, aka Mediafetcher. “Celine Dion presumed dead in private plane crash”, Global claims that Celine died today at Denver Peak-Regional Airport.”

Fox News instead, revealed a contradictory view of the event as their hoax post stated: “Investigators have told reporters that Celine Dion lost control while driving a friend’s car on Interstate 80 and overturned the vehicle several times killing her instantly. The vehicle was believed to have been running at approximately 152 kilometers per hour (95 mph) in an area where the limit was 88 km an hour (55 mph) at the time of the accident.”

According to About.com, these grim pranks are caused by series of misleading applications which can access user’s profile information and subsequently post messages without their knowledge. The purpose of these applications is to spread by posting information on all pages of user’s friends.

A similar prank emerged in March 2012, when the message “RIP Celine Dion” circulated on Twitter.

The celebrities who had to deny the news about their death include Justin Bieber, Eddie Murphy, Kanye West, Britney Spears and Morgan Freeman.
