After famed giraffe Marius was killed last month, now it was time for 4 lions to face death at the notorious Copenhagen Zoo! But tragically, more animal killings are rumored to come.

The zoo representatives claim this situation is about preserving a healthy lion population. Four lions were euthanized on Monday, a 16-year-old male lion, a 14-year-old female lion and two younger lions.

The old lion had been in fact pictured earlier in the month eating a piece of that giraffe that has been controversially culled at the same Zoo.

Danish officials say that the older lion pair were very very old and featured the risk of breading with their own offspring and in order to prevent own inbreeding they took the decision to euthanize and replace them with a younger male lion which in turn posed the risk to kill the other two younger lions and to prevent that from happening, Zoo keepers believed that is better to euthanize the younger lions as well.

The new lion is about 3 years old, large for his age and healthy, the zoo said. After it was given a couple of days to accommodate to his new environment, visitors will be able to see him.

“He is a gorgeous young male and I am sure he will be an impressive ambassador for his species,” said zoo chief Steffen Straede quoted by CNN.

He added the 3 young lions would “be the foundation of the zoo’s next lion era.”
