Voice of America radio stops Russia broadcast after Moscow refused license extension

“Voice of America” radio station’s broadcasting in Russia was halted after the contract that allowed to operate in the country has expired, announced Wednesday Dmitry Kiselev, head of Rossiya Segodnya news agency, quoted by RIA Novosti. The Russians said that VOA is a “spam on our airwaves”.

Dmitry Kiselev is known also as the journalist who said during a program on the state-run national television “Rossiya 1” that his country is the only one in the world that can turn the United States into a nuclear ash.

The U.S. audiovisual authority sent a notification to the Russian side to extend the VOA station contract, but the request was rejected.

“We will not cooperate anymore”, said Kiselev in a letter dated 21 March and addressed the U.S. Broadcasting Board (U.S. Broadcasting Board of Governors – BBG), the authority which coordinates the transmission of the radio stations “Voice of America” and “Voice Svoboda”.
