Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie sentenced to death

An Egyptian court confirmed Saturday the death sentences handed down earlier to Muslim Brotherhood chief, Mohamed Badie, and other 11 people accused of inciting chaos and violence, announced the judge in a televised broadcast.

Two other Islamists were sentenced to death in absentia and 37 others were jailed for life, including Egyptian-American citizen Mohamed Soltan, held in August 2013 and currently on a hunger strike. The latter was convicted for delivering false news and support for the Muslim Brotherhood. He is the son of Muslim Brotherhood preacher Salah Soltan, who was also sentenced to death on Saturday.

Mohamed Badie was tried and charged with several counts. In February, another court convicted him and other Islamist leaders to life imprisonment in another case.
