Facebook activates Safety Check feature after Nigeria bombing

Facebook activated its “Safety Check” feature in Nigeria after scores of people were killed and injured in Tuesday night’s bombing in northeastern city of Yola.

The founder of world’s largest social network, Mark Zuckerberg, announced the activation in a message posted on his account early Wednesday.

“We’ve activated Safety Check again after the bombing in Nigeria this evening,” said Zuckerberg.

Facebook’s “Safety check” allows websurfers to “check-in” and let family and friends know they are ok. The feature is implemented after the network was hit by serious backlash for activating it only for Paris attacks on Friday – but not after bomb explosions hit the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Thursday.

The San Francisco-based network is blamed for discriminatory valuation of lives in favor of Western victims. Facebook rejected the accusations.

“After the Paris attacks last week, we made the decision to use Safety Check for more tragic events like this going forward. We’re now working quickly to develop criteria for the new policy and determine when and how this service can be most useful,” Zuckerberg said.
