Snowboard Freeride World Champion Estelle Balet Dies in Swiss Alps Avalanche

Estelle Balet, a 21-year-old world snowboarding champion at Freeride World Tour, died on Tuesday after being caught by an avalanche in the Swiss Alps during a film shoot.

According to preliminary information, Balet was gliding down on a rocky slope when the avalanche erupted.

Police say the 21-year-old Swiss athlete was struck while filming above Orsieres, near Switzerland’s southern border with France and Italy. She had been following another snowboarder, who wasn’t caught in the avalanche.
