The fire that wreaked havoc on Burgos on Saturday emerged as a result of an explosion, whose cause is yet not known.

The vessel was reportedly transporting 80,000 barrels of diesel, 71,000 of gasoline and 16,000 barrels of desulfurized gasoline, according to Mexico’s communications and transport ministry. It has a capacity to carry 270,000 barrels.

Burgos was sailing about 15 kilometers off the coast of Boca del Rio in Veracruz, when the incident sparked.

Pemex revealed in a Twitter message that the crew was safely rescued while reassuring that there is no safety risk to the local population.

Mexican navy ships rushed to the spot where they set up barriers around the tanker just to secure the perimeter in case an oil leak occurs.
