Romania is set to enjoy celebratory moments tomorrow when famed F-16 fighter jets will become part of its army in a historic first!

Minister of National Defence, Mihnea Motoc, announced on Wednesday that his country is ready to welcome six F16s from Portugal, out of a total number of 12.

“The first six F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft wearing the Romanian Air Force insignia on their fuselage will be officially taken over from Portugal tomorrow, September 28, 2016. Although I hesitate to use big words when talking about major acquisitions, I must say that tomorrow will be a truly historic day for Romania and its army,” wrote Mihnea Motoc on his Facebook page.

The jets will be stationed at air bases in Feteşti and Campia Turzii, which have been specially upgraded for hosting F16s.

The other six aircraft are expected to be delivered by the end of 2016. The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon will replace the obsolete Russian-made MiG- 21 LanceR planes that are currently used by the Romanian Air Forces.

In 2013, Romanian authorities decided to buy 12 second-hand F-16A/B Block 15 aircraft from Portugal at a price of 628 million euros and two years later revealed the intention to purchase even more aircraft of the same kind.
