Vitaly Churkin dead. Russia’s ambassador to United Nations dies of heart attack

Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nation, has died in New York City on Monday.

The diplomat was rushed to a Manhattan hospital following a cardiac arrest, writes the US press, revealing that upon rescuers’ arrival Vitali Churkin was unconscious and needed resuscitation maneuvers. Unfotunately the doctors could no longer do anything for him despite intensive CPR efforts.

The Russian Foreign Ministry comfirmed Churkin’s death short time ago.

Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin had been Russia’s ambassador to the UN for almost 11 years and would have turned 65 tomorrow.

He was appointed as Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in May 2006 after he had previously served as Russia’s ambassador to Canada (1998-2003) and Belgium (1994-1998). Furthermore, he worked also as a liaison ambassador to NATO and Western European Union during his term in Belgium.

United Nations officials announced that they are “shocked” by Churkin’s sudden death and expressed their condolences to Russian government in Moscow.

“He had been such a constant presence here that I can say I’m pretty shocked. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, and to the Russian government,” said a spokesman for the UN Secretary General’s office.

Churkin was known as a tenacious defender of Russian policy, particularly regarding the air raids campaign in Sysia.

According to Kremlin officials quoted by Reuters, “President Putin is deeply saddened by the sudden death of Russia’s UN envoy, Vitaly Churkin, who died in New York just a day before his 65th birthday”.

“The leader of the state greatly appreciated Churkin’s professionalism and diplomatic talent” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
