Psychrolutes marcidus lives at depths between 600 and 1,200 meters off the coast of Australia and is threatened with extinction because of intensive fishing nets and seines .
Its bodily appearance, which has the allure of an old man’s face with a big soft nose, made the animal earn the first place in the competition organized on the Internet. Jelly fish received 795 votes out of a total of more than 3,000 opinions, according to AFP.
Kakapo, a nocturnal parrot in New Zealand, dubbed also the “parrot – owl”, which can not fly, was ranked second.
The third place was given to Axolotl, a caudate amphibian from Mexico, which has the ability to spend their entire life in the larval stage, without ever turning to an adult, said Coralie Young, from the British Science Association, which sponsored this event in Newcastle, the UK.
The contest saw also proboscis monkey ( Nasalis larvatus ), easily recognizable for its huge nose, red testicles and prominent abdomen, as well as the Lake Titicaca’s frog whose pleated skin allows it to breathe plenty of time underwater, but her physical appearance brought her the sad nickname of “frog scrotum”.
In total, the site that hosted the competition attracted 88,000 visitors.
“It was a fun way to raise awareness about the protection of nature,” said Coralie Young.
The title awarded to the winning fish will enable it to become the official mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, which gathers humorists who support the endangered species, punished because of their ungrateful physical aspect.
This association was founded in order to “showcase some of the children mostly “punished” by the Mother Nature”. Members of the association believe that so far “panda bear has received a too high attention”.
