Four people died on Thursday after a block of ice cracked off in a mountainous area in northern Italy. One person managed to escape alive, writes abc news.
The incident took place in the Valle d’Aosta region near the border with Switzerland where the climbers ventured into an expedition in Gressoney-Saint-Jean.
A chunk of ice from a frozen waterfall split from the mountainside and killed the four victims. The person who survived was seriously injured and saved by the rescue teams.
According to Italian officials, the sudden rise in temperatures on Wednesday have apparently led to the melting of the ice slab and its detachment.
