Romanian athlete Marius Ionescu claimed 20 van Alphen 2016, a 20-km foot race that took place in the Dutch city of Alphen aan den Rijn on Sunday. Ionescu was clocked with a total time of 1 h 01 min 10 sec.
The second place was booked by another Romanian runner, Alexandru Corneschi who made it to the finish line in 1 hour 01 minutes 24 seconds, while Nicolae Soare finished ninth after 1 hr 04 min 01 sec.
20 Van Alphen race was a good opportunity for Ionescu to check his condition after he has been training in Monte Gordo, Portugal as of January this year. Furthermore, the Dutch event could be used also as a rehearsal before his participation in the Dusseldorf marathon on April 24, where the 32-year-old long-distance Romanian runner has to defend the title he claimed at the 2015 edition of the German event.
After the race in the Netherlands, Marius Ionescu traveled to Portugal where he will train for about 10 days before returning to Romania.

The first edition of “20 van Alphen” was held in 1953 but the event was organized annually only after 1973. Originally, the competition used to take place on Saturdays, but it was changed to Sundays since 2000.
From 1987, the Dutch race earned the status of international road race and of as 1990, 20 van Alphen has become part of the Run Classics.
