Google Inc. announced on Friday that it suffered a short disruption in the operation of its email service “Gmail” which is used by hundreds of millions of individuals and companies from around the world.
“We’re investigating reports on Gmail’s issue. We will provide more information shortly,” said the company on “App Status” from its “Dashboard”, which tracks the status of various Google services.
After being down for nearly half an hour, the Internet giant reassured that the email service was restored for some users and “problem is expected to be resolved for all users in the near future.”
A statement from the search engine reads: “The problem with Gmail should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.”

Two other Google services such as the social network Google+ Plus and the video-sharing site YouTube, were reportedly affected as they either appeared to load slowly for some or show interruption for other.
In Google+ case, I can confirm that the social network failed to load anything as it returned a “500” error message. However, everything got back to normal in minutes. Google Drive seemed to function properly on one occasion, but failed to load file names and images on a subsequent refresh.
Of course, this failure turned out to be a good attack opportunity for Google’s competitor, Yahoo Inc., which runs a rival internet email service, as it took the time to post on Twitter a screenshot of Gmail’s error page.
Interesting is the fact that after making fun of Google by re-tweeting repeatedly the message on Gmail’s outage, Yahoo deleted its tweets and came up with an apology message as seen below:
