Wednesday morning Google Romania fell victim to a DNS poisoning attack apparently carried out by algerian hacker MCA-CRB.

Kaspersky Lab specialists say that the situation which involved several Romanian websites including google.ro, was generated rather by a local DNS attack, targeting the Internet service providers. Practically the cybercriminals changed DNS servers data with their data in order to redirect user’s Internet traffic.

“When we heard about this DNS poisoning attack on Romanian sites Google (google.ro) and Yahoo! (yahoo.ro) made by MCA-CRB Algerian hacker, we were pretty skeptical. Currently, the most common possibility is that a DNS attack at ISPs (Internet Service Provider) level takes place in Romania. Some web-domains are diverted, others do not,” said Stefan Tanase, senior regional researcher, EEMEA, Global Research and Analysis Team at Kaspersky Lab.

According to experts, “a system so large as Google can be hacked in theory, but practically it is highly unlikely”.

“We noticed that both domains (Yahoo & Google) were linked to an IP address located in the Netherlands: 95.128.3.172 (server1.joomlapartner.nl), so it seems more like a DNS poisoning incident. There are several scenarios under consideration. Given that not all “.ro” domains were affected, it is unlikely to consider the hacking of RoTLD (Romanian Top Level Domain Registrar). Another scenario is that only Google and Yahoo RoTLD accounts have been affected, but, given that also websites such as PayPal.ro, Microsoft.ro and others have suffered, every scenario would be possible” , added Tanase.

Wednesday morning Google.ro has been inaccessible for several hours. At that time, the search engine homepage displayed an image featuring the following message: “By MCA-CRB – Algerian Hacker – S thanks = Mr-AdeL & i-Hmx & Lagripe-Dz All Members Sec – To Be Continued ….”

The hackers targeted Google.ro’s DNS servers, so that when typing google.ro in browsers address bar, users would actually be diverted to a server hosted in Holland by company EMango.

We are in contact with the organization responsible for managing domain names (DNS) in the country,” said Google Romania hours after the incident.
