    The cabin of the IAR-111 Excelsior supersonic airplane was tested in flight over the Black Sea earlier this week, and the Romanian Association for Cosmonautics and Aeronautics (ARCA) said the event was a success. More details on the flight test results will be communicated on Thursday.

    On 19 September 2011, ARCA announced that it has completed the aerodynamic simulations for IAR-111, a supersonic aircraft designed for the launch of Haas II space rocket as part of Astronautics competition Google Lunar X Prize.

    This will be the first Romanian supersonic plane to be used for development of space tourism technologies.

    Haas II is a three-stage space rocket as part of Google’s program. The main objective of the program is to launch the European Lunar Explorer probe and thus claim the competition.

    ARCA’s program for Google Lunar X Prize contest is financed exclusively by private sources and the first flight is scheduled in autumn 2012. ARCA has not communicated the costs of the program.
