Kim Jong Nam was the eldest son of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. His mother was Kim Jong-il’s first mistress, Song Hye-rim, who died in Moscow in 2002.

Kim Jong-nam’s chances to accede to political power were dashed in 2001 when he was caught trying to enter Japan using a fake Dominican passport.

Later, he began to be persecuted by his father who thought he could be a threat to the planned succession of Kim Jong-un, the current leader.

For many years, Kim Jong-nam feared that his life would be in danger because of his criticism of the Pyongyang’s regime which he described as “a joke to the outside world”.
