Moldova is on the verge of a revolution and the solution appears to be in the hands of country’s president Nicolae Timofti, writes the Romanian version of Deutsche Welle.
56 Members of the Moldovan Parliament proposed again that controversial businessman Vladimir Plahotniuc should be appointed country’s prime minister. And this happened even if the president rejected the initial proposal on the same day, citing integrity reasons.
“We make an appeal to the President Nicolae Timofti to take into account the willingness expressed by the absolute majority of the Moldovan parliament and act under the national interest and the Supreme Law. We declare unanimously and unequivocally that Vladimir Plahotniuc is our proposal for the position of prime minister in strict conformity with constitutional provisions,” reads the statement of 56 the MPs.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau on thursday to support the President Timofti. The leader of the Socialist Party PSRM, Igor Dodon (who had previously insisted on the dismissal of the President, said on Thursday that the socialist lawmakers will not support president’s removal this time because it would make the early elections -desired by PSRM- impossible. In case of a highly unlikely dismissal of the country’s leader, the interim office would be taken by Adrian Candu, the head of the parliament and the wedding godson of the controversial Vlad Plahotniuc. In such a context, political analysts say that the godson would simply appoint his godfather as a premier.
