  • Amsterdam VUmc did not report controversial patient death

    Patient diagnozed with lung cancer died during surgery but he death was not reported by VUmc
    Amsterdam’s VU University Medical Center failed to inform the Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ) about a patient’s death on the operation table of the controversial doctor Rick Paul in August last year. According to Radio 1, the incident will be debated on the program Argos.

    The deceased patient who had lung cancer, was scheduled to undergo a surgery in which a portion of the lung was supposed to be removed. During the operation, however, there was a hole in a blood vessel that could not be closed on time. Apparently the patient lost so much blood that he died, according to the program.

    The former head of the internal investigation authority claims that not all deaths on operating tables must be reported and cited as example cases involving complications. However, the former IGZ inspectors, questioned this particular death and suggested that the case should have been reported.

    It is also notable that lung surgeon Rick Paul was the one who tipped the IGZ about a death case at the VUmc in March 2011 which involved a patient in whose treatment he had not been not involved.     In late October it was unveiled that a lung patient of the VUmc probably unnecessary died in March last year when he was transported to another hospital.

    VUmc has remained for several months under close supervision because of conflicts in the pulmonary department. The poor communication can pose a danger to the patients and might lead to unnecessary deaths to patients diagnozed with lung diseases.
