  • Romanian actor Sebastian Papaiani dies at 80

    Legendary actor Sebastian Papaiani died Tuesday morning according to Romanian state-run television TVR. He was 80-year-old.

    Papaiani had suffered a stroke last May and had been hospitalized at Neurology Section of the University Emergency Hospital in Bucharest. Following the unfortunate event, his health condition deteriorated substantially over the past months.

    Papaiani’s death comes just a day after Ioan Gyuri Pascu, – a great comedian, actor and musician -, passed away at his home in the Romanian capital following a cardiac arrest.

    Sebastian Papaiani was born on August 25, 1936 in Pitesti, Arges County. He spent his childhood, as he recounted, “in a modest neighborhood which a lot of friendly Gypsies around”.

    His father, Alec Papaiani was of Greek origin (Papayannis) and known as the owner of a residential area on the outskirts of Pitesti where two-room apartments were rented to low class workers.

    As a kid, Sebastian was fascinated by the local circus and the classic movie stars like John Wayne and Johnny Weissmuller. At 17 he got a job at a pharmacy office and started playing amateur theater at the suggestion of former Miss Romania 1936, Crina Cojocaru, who supported him in overcoming various obstacles and becoming an actor.

    Papaiani graduated from the Institute of Theater and Cinema in 1960 and made his film debut three years later in Geo Zaizescu’s comedy “Un suras in plina vara” (A smile in the middle of summer), when he received critical acclaims alongside gorgeous actress Florina Luican. Then he starred in a tremendous number of films being remembers by his movie fans for his roles in: “BD …” (Plutonier Capsuna), “Asta seara dansam in familei” (Alecu), “Toamna bobocilor” (Pompei) and “Toate panzele sus” (Ieremia)

    Romanian actor Serban Ionescu actor passed away Wednesday evening at Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest, said director Radu Macovei.

    Ionescu was taken to the ICU unit of the Emergency Hospital Floreasca after his condition had worsened. Hospital representatives confirmed Serban Ionescu’s admission, but refused to give details about actor’s health condition.

    “Serban Ionescu was admitted to hospital on Tuesday. We can not say anything else as the female person who accompany him requested us to not provide information on patient’s condition,” said Floreasca Hospital spokesman, doctor Bogdan Oprita .
