At Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016 in Las Vegas, L’Oreal presented a super-thin smart patch which is able to monitor skin exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays and thus prevent the cancer appearance, informs bbc.com.
This device is set to hit the markets in 16 countries next summer and will be distributed for free. The ultrafine structure of the patch contains a photosensitive blue dye that changes color when exposed to UV rays.
The patch which came to light at the Technology Department of the L’Oreal company, was developed by a team of 25 researchers who worked in various cities around the world including New York, Paris and Singapore.

The product in question, called “My UV Patch“, is slimmer than an usual plaster and can stay onto the skin for a period of up to five days. “My UV Patch” is of single use and can be applied to any area of the body.
The market saw already several other devices that measure exposure to ultraviolet rays, but L’Oreal says “My UV Patch” is the first example of a portable device that is also stretchable and flexible.
On the other hand, the developer warns that the patch was not created to remind wearers to apply sun protection cream on their skin, but only to monitor the level of exposure to ultraviolet radiation, acting as a warning device.
