  • Mecca’s Hajj pilgrimage tragedy: More than 700 dead and 900 injured in Mina horrific stampede

    According to Saudi officials, a sudden surge of pilgrims lead to stampede that killed hundreds on Thursday. The incident occurred in an area where authorities set-up countless tents which provide shelter to pilgrims. Civil protection teams were deployed on the field to offer first aid and direct the flow of pilgrims to alternative routes. The bodies of the victims and the wounded were rushed to nearby hospitals.

    Street 204, where the stampede occurred, is one of the two main routes leading from Mina to Jamar, the site where the pilgrims ritually kill Satan by throwing stones at three large columns.

    Saudi Health Minister Khaled al-Faleh, said that the deadly crush was caused by the lack of discipline of the believers who did not comply with the directions given by pilgrimage officials. “If the pilgrims would follow the instructions, we could avoid this kind of accident,” said the Minister for the public television El-Ekhbariya after a visit to the site. “Many pilgrims set into motion without sticking to the schedules arranged by the organizers”, added the minister who promised a ‘rapid and transparent’ investigation.

    Hundreds have been killed in past years during the same ceremony, and it comes only 13 days after a crane collapse killed more than 100 people at another major Islamic holy site, the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

    The incident is the deadliest disaster at Mina since 1990, when 1,426 people died.
