  • Syrian refugee finally enters Turkey after being trapped for one year at Ataturk airport in Istanbul

A Syrian refugee, who has remained stuck for 369 days at Istanbul’s International Airport waiting for an entry permit in Turkey was transferred to a detention center in the city.

According to Amnesty International, Fadi Mansour left the “Problematic Passengers Room” at Ataturk Airport for a migrant center in Istanbul.

The 28-year-old Syrian law student fled his war-torn country in 2012 in efforts to find a better life in Europe. After a smuggler told him that the easiest way to access Europe is via Malaysia, Mansour took his chance which in the end led to his current story. He traveled through Lebanon before arriving in Istanbul where he took a flight to Malaysia where he was denied from entering the country.

As a consequence, he was constrained to return to Atatürk Airport where he was arrested on 15 March 2015 and detained in a windowless room with no natural light but with artificial lighting constantly on.

“My only dream now is to sleep with the lights off,” said Mansour for Amnesty International.

The situation has been compared to the hero of the movie “Terminal” starred by Tom Hanks.
