Hard to believe but former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase was sentenced in the “Quality Trophy” file to two years in jail and was banned on more rights for a period of five years. This is a serious signal that Romania (third most corrupt nation in the EU after Greece and Bulgaria) is cracking down on graft (scroll down for video-sentencing moment).

On Wednesday (June 20, 2012), the Magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice gave their verdict in Quality Trophy (Trofeul Calitatii) case in which the former premier is accused of illegal fundraising for his 2004 presidential campaign.

Nastase was charged in connection with fundraisers organized for the 2004 campaign when he ran as the PSD (Social Democrat Party) candidate for Romania’s Presidency. The five judges of the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) upheld elements of appeals made by Adrian Nastase and the other defendants.

In the end, the court overturned a previous sentence issued in January when Nastase was convicted to 2 years in cell and, and on re-trial, changed the legal classification of the accusations. For the new charges, the judges decided to give the former premier a (similar) 2 two year sentence, “unsuspended” this time.

On January 30, 2012, Adrian Nastase had received a 2 year sentence for corruption charges. The ex-prime minister argued all along that the case was political ordered (Basescu behind everything) and allegedly there is no evidence to incriminate him.

“This whole case was fabricated by DNA (Anticorruption National Division). I fully trust that during my appeal the new arguments will be taken into consideration,” said the Romanian politician. Also Nastase’s lawyer had said on the last term of the trial, after more than 14 hours spent in court, that he trusts in justice.
