Contradictory reports emerged on Thursday that ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi died of injuries. Colonel Gadhafi’s death was announced by National Transitional Council TV broadcaster Al-Ahrar but there was no source mentioned. Moammar Gadhafi’s capture was also revealed by Libyan television, quoting the Misrata Military Council

The first photograph which popped-up on the internet featured the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi alive in his last moments before dying. Times of Malta was the website that first released the photo apparently taken by an AFP photographer who pictured the ousted Libyan leader using a mobile phone.

According to an official of the National Transitional Council (NTC), Abdel Majid, the former Libyan leader would allegedly be wounded on both legs and was taken over by an ambulance. Moreover, Al-Jazeera journalists’ sources claimed that he had died of serious wounds.

Shortly after the news was released, Tripoli’s residents took to the streets to express their joy.

However, confusion reigns regarding the fate of Libyan dictator. Even within the Transitional National Council there are conflicting opinions about what happened on Thursday with Gaddafi: some say that he was caught and is seriously injured, others say he died from injuries while being captured. These information are not yet confirmed from independent sources.

Shammai Mahmoud, Minister of Information for the Libyan National Transition Council has made allusions to Gaddafi’s capture, but no clear information was confirmed.

“I think we can say that Sirte is freed … I think there are manifestations of joy in the streets right now. It is rumoured about a “big fish” (e.g. Gaddafi) who was caught. I can not confirm anything at the moment but the people out there speak about the capture of a big fish.”

Asked what would happen if Gaddafi would be caught, Shammai said: “We will bring him before the court, we do not intent to hang him in the street. We are going to judge him correctly, even if he did not proceed the same with Libyan people. We hope to catch also other big names to judge them and let people have the last word on their fate … I think everyone wants to see Gaddafi on court. “

A confirmation came from the Libyan Minister for Immigration, Errishi Ali, who told al-Jazeera that he spoke to NTC fighters who claimed Gaddafi seizure and also the capture of his spokesman, Ibrahim Moussa.
“He is at this moment, in the custody of our fighters … I’m very, very confident in my sources … If it was not true, I would not have been awakened from Misra in early morning, because I am in Washington”. Al-Jazeera reports that NATO forces had fired on the convoy that was protecting Gaddafi, but this report is not confirmed.
