More exactly, Benetton’s poster revealed Pope Benedict XVI kissing on the lips Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayyeb, the current imam of the Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, Egypt, and a leading voice in Sunni Islam.

The controversial Benetton pulled the billboard with a photo montage that showed the mouth to mouth kissing between Pope and Imam. The poster was displayed right next to the Vatican, above Castel Sant’Angelo, and was intended to highlight the culture against hatred, according to the producers.

The Vatican was not very excited about such a stupid idea, and protested vehemently. “It is a serious lack of respect for the Pope, an offense to the feelings of believers and a clear example of how the advertising may violate the elementary rules of respect for the pope, in order to attract attention through a challenge,” said Vatican’s spokesperson.

The ad most likely managed to stun the passers-by and to anger the christians, muslims and Vatican altogether.

But Benedict ad was not all what you could see in Rome. There were also other personalities featured in the striking photo-montage. For example some images highlighted US President Barack Obama kissing Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao or Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

Some other photo unveiled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu smooching Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas. Also the European leader “participated” at the exhibition with French President Nicolas Sarkozy kissing Germany’s Angela Merkel (at least this one is a little more normal:).

Also Il Cavaliere Silvio Berlusconi kissing Merkel was supposed to be displayed but was pulled in the last moments following the resignation of the jovial billionaire.
