Video: Sun-powered plane to set flight record over Mediterranean area

Solar Impulse aircraft at night. The plane is currently performing first flight over Mediterranean Sea

Solar Impulse, an aircraft powered by solar batteries, is trying to accomplish the world’s first cross-Mediterranean flight between Europe and North Africa (scroll down for video).

The revolutionary aircraft uses 12,000 solar cells, but can not fly faster than 70 km/h, a speed of about 10 times lower than the cruising speed of the commercial airplanes.

The Solar Impulse aircraft took off from western Switzerland and needed 20 hours to get to Madrid, Spain.

After stop-over in Madrid, it will resume its journey on Monday to the Morocco’s capital city of Rabat, the final destination of the trip. The flight aims as a “last rehearsal” before a round-the-world record attempt in 2014.

Pilot Andre Borschberg, who flew the plane to Madrid, was extremelly enchanted that the plane flies only using solar energy.

“The funniest part is being capable to climb up to 9,000 metres using only solar energy, and the more I will fly during the day, the more energy I will collect even in the batteries, so that’s very impressing, quite different.

Solar plane project was launched nine years ago and had a budget of 90 million euros. The project is financed by private companies. The 4 main partners are Solvay, Omega SA Deutsche Bank and Schindler.
