Basescu Vs. Ponta disputes to monopolize Romania – The Economist

The harsh disputes between President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Victor Ponta seemed to monopolize the public opinion in Romania, moving country’s important economic issues on the background.

And all these happen in a period when the last thing Romanians need is a new episode of political instability, claims The Economist.

“A new period of political instability is the last thing the Romanians need now. Romania has changed government twice this year. Thousands of people took to the streets in January to protest against the austerity measures and denounce the living standards”.

“President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Victor Ponta attack each other without remorses. The battle started a month ago, when Ponta announced his intention to replace the president at the European Council summit,” notes financial journal in a paper called “Victor Ponta at war “, recalling that the Romanian Prime Minister continued the disputes, suggesting the initiation of suspension of President Basescu.

“The fight between the Romanian top political leaders monopolized the public debate; the main issues of Romania’s agenda at the European Council – such as the access to structural funds and the Schengen accession – are not important anymore for the public debate. Even Foreign Minister Andrei Marga was unable to present country’s official agenda for the European summit. When asked by Romanian media about Bucharest’s position at the Brussels summit, his spokesman said that Mr Marga did not have enough time to “process information”, says The Economist.

Actually Brussels, does not really care if Romania is represented by the President or Prime Minister, given that fact that the country does not have a great influence on the European Council decisions,” added the financial magazine.

The Economist points out that Ponta was recently accused by the journal Nature for plagiarising significant that parts of his PhD thesis, but the Romanian Prime Minister rejected the allegations stating as usually that President Basescu is behind scandal. Apparently there is a new absurd trend in Romania at this moment: for any mistake made by politicians, Basescu is to blame.

In an interview with The Economist, Ponta admitted that Romania is currently experiencing a crisis of international credibility. According to The Economist, the high-level disputes do not help the nation at all. Ponta believes that disputes will be over only after the parliamentary elections in autumn, when Romania could change the government again, but till then it might be too late.

“Meanwhile, how does this crisis affect Romania? The nation currency dropped to a record level against the euro. The political disputes can influence also Romania’s chances to become a member of the Schengen passport free area this year. Political leaders in Bucharest seem to have forgotten already the thousands of people who protested in the cold early this year,” concludes The Economist blog.

    Why is it so important who represents Romania at the European Council ?
    And Who should represent us in Brussels; an abuser of a small child in a barbaric way with a brutal punch of this ex~pirate & seaport smuggler (rhetorical question) ?!

      Indeed Simon. Apparently it does not really matter who represents Romania, but clearly Ponta sparked the scandal. As a PM he could have had other better things to do. Anyway the war Ponta vs. Basescu is not relevant at all compared to the dictatorial way USL changes the states intitutions. Outrageous is the fact that they do it overnight, their intentions are clear, to have Antonescu ascended to the presidential seat before elections. Furthermore, the country is left without oposition which is for long known as the best way to a dictatorship.
      Question: What if USL does not meet the expectations of the Romanian people? What are they gonna do as another voting alternating won’t exist in the coming 4 years? The only hope is to have USL keeping their “honest” promises, otherwise…

    I do not think that USL will bring us miracles until autumn, but what social & economic disaster left us bloody PDL, we can not fix it not even by 2020 , I mean:
    ~ PDL distroyed over 300,000 middle and small companies (some comp. of some friends of mine) with aberant huge taxes;
    ~ Over two million unemployed in just 2-3 years, blocking the labor market with a sinister new labor law leaving employee without any rights, thus employee becoming a poor servant of the employer (Incredible/terrible law in the E.U.);
    ~ Scumbag Ex-Sailor ScârBăsescu left us a colossal debt of 100 billion Euros to the I.M.F., by his outrageous incompetence, removing/rushing many foreign investors by its totalitarian policies, taking over abusive/brutal government powers & violating constitution many, many times/years, almost every day coming up with a new major aberration:
    I’m tired & sick of this tyrant !!!
    P.S.: And NO, there’s no obsession about this ‘human misery & nullity’, only sick, a lot… 🙁

      Somehow the figures mentioned by you (if true) would be enough to spark the irritation of the people. However what is not clear to me is why the folks are continuosly blaming Basescu as the President in Romania does not really have too many attributions like in other countries (see e.g. U.S, France). I would understand if criticizing the Parliament and all politicians. I doubt that Basescu would have been such a “superman” able to do everything by himself. Furthermore he does not seem to be that rich like other Parliament Members or “underground” politicians.

        …because was him who control the past governments and political institutions
        …he controlled the national security service
        …and is seen as an anti-communism abroad, but he is a former security officer of the old regime
        …his motto was: “to live well” , but in Romania only few people live better, actually people have become much poorer…..he, his family, those around them have become very rich in no time
        ..he said some time ago: if you do not like in Romania go to work abroad and many have left
        …when he was mayor he gave himself a free house in the capital
        …when he was transport minister sold romanian fleet for scrap, but these vessels are still good shipping, but for others
        …He lobbies for gold mine, which would leave the country without four huge mountains and a lake of cyanide and of this country get almost nothing
        …he was president, he took a few drinks and he went to drive his car ( I saw this on national television)
        …and many others which are not crossing my mind right now
        (sorry for my bad English)
