Nine climbers of British, German, Spanish and Swiss nationalities, died on Thursday on Mont Blanc mountain after being caught by an avalanche. The tragedy is seen as the worst in the French Alps over the last decade.

The victims who were overtaken by the avalanche at an altitude of 4,000 meters on a climbing route used by thousands of climbers every summer, are three Germans, three British, two Spanish and one Swiss, according to AFP.

“The death toll stopped at nine. There is none else on the list of missing persons. This is a “good” news that ends a dramatic day,” said Lt. Emmanuel Vegas, from the gendarmerie brigate in Chamonix.

According to a report released by authorities on Thursday, 12 wounded people were sent to hospital in Sallanches. A Swiss, who was seriously injured, was carried to Sion, Switzerland.

“I did not see anything. The snow pushed me. When we climb, we do not look up,” said Daniel Rosseto, a 63-year-old independent guide, who was dragged by the snowfall for about 200 meters along with a group of Danish people.

French Interior Minister, Manuel Valls, who inspected the drama’s spot from a helicopter, has not concluded yet about the cause of the accident, however there is a hypothesis that the avalanche was triggered by the passage of a climber.

“An investigation was opened, being under the authority of the prosecutor,” said the minister.

“It is a difficult area of the mountain. The wind probably led to an accumulation of snow which dislodged when the mountaineers passed,” said Delfino Viglione, an official of the Italian rescue teams who joined the search operations. “Mont Blanc can cause problems even in the summer. You should never let your guard down. Unfortunately, these tragedies are common,” added Viglione.

The last climbing accident in the Alps took place on August 24, 2008, when eight people – three Swiss, one Austrian guide and four Germans – were caught by an avalanche caused the fall of ice, on the Mont Blanc.
