Video report: U.S. Consulate in flames as Benghazi rocket attack kills Ambassador Stevens

A video shows the U.S. consulate in fire in the city of Benghazi, Libya, where the American ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other officials lost their lives following an attack with rocket-propelled grenades Tuesday night (scroll down for video footage).

The ambassador was killed after he rushed to the consulate building to help evacuate his country fellows.

Armed protesters attacked the building by launching rockets from nearby, according to Libyan security sources. The demonstrators were protesting against a film deemed offensive to Islam when the situation escalated out of control.

Stevens’ death was confirmed in a Twitter post by Libyan deputy, Mustafa Abu Shagur who denounced the “barbaric acts”.

The film, produced by an Israeli-American citizen, also sparked violent demonstrations in front of U.S. embassy in Cairo, where the Egyptian protestors replaced the American flag with the Islamic banners. According to the Wall Street Journal, the film, entitled “Innocence of Muslims” was produced by the Israeli-American Sam Bacile. After demonstration in Cairo, he told WSJ: “Islam is a cancer.”

A senior U.S. official said it was a grenade attack resulting in the consulate building on fire. Ambassador Chris Stevens tried to take refuge on the roof, where he died suffocated because of the dense smoke.
