The tragedy struck Friday morning whilst Chapple and the other campers were sleeping in their tents near the Von Post glacier, approximately 45 kilometers from Longyearbyen.

The 500-kilos animal saw the humans as a possible prey and rushed into one of the four tents that were put up at the site. The bear mauled the 17-year-old teenager to death and injured 4 other adventurers before being gunned down.

According to the witnesses it seems that the 29-year-old Michael Reid from Plymouth killed the bear. However he underwent serious injures and was airlifted to Tromso hospital where his condition is now stable.
