Nederland accuses Romania of blackmail.
Dutch Minister of Immigration, Gerd Leers, believes that blocking the Dutch flower shipments at the customs, raises one more reason to keep Romania out of the Schengen area, according to AD newspaper, quoted by Radio Netherlands.
That sounds like a blackmail retaliation from the Dutch side as Schengen supposes different things. Besides that, Leerds is somehow wrong because there can not be anymore other reason as long as he expressed his rejecting vote before the situation developed. So, Romania had already been doomed for the second time to stay out of Schengen, therefore the subsequent reasons do not matter anymore for them.
The scandal of the dutch trucks stopped at the Romanian borders grows from day to day. The dispute between the Netherlands and Romania on the transport of flowers is known as “Tulip War.” Romanian media are even funnier calling it “Schengen Bacteria”. Transport of flowers, bulbs and seeds from the Netherlands were prevented to enter Romania, saying that authorities fear the presence of a “dangerous bacteria.”
So far, not clear sign of bacteria was found and furthermore Romanian authorities turned out to be even harsher by checking also the working hours of truck drivers and technical defects as well, which is not a normal procedure.
The newspaper notes that the strict controls were introduced just a day after Dutch government decided to block the entry of Romania and Bulgaria into the Schengen area. Christian Democrats and Freedom Party urged Brussels authorities to take action against Bucharest.

Romanian Embassy refused to comment on this topic. Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi is angry because the Dutch denial on the accession of his country in Schengen. The Dutch government “is somehow trapped in the anti-emigration and anti-European political agenda of an extremist party,” said Baconschi, referring to the Freedom Party.
The newspaper notes that it is not clear whether there is any connection between the two subjects. While the dispute continues for the fourth day, the flowers begin to wither and the blockade has led so far to 100,000 euro losses for the Dutch horticulture sector.

Were the Dutch tricked to bite a wrong bait?
Romania is a large open consuming market for Western countries. Probably that was the price paid and the reason for being accepted in European Union in 2007. Well, Romania was already denied a previous attempt to enter Schengen when France expressed fermly its opposition. At that time a diplomatic scandal ignited between the two countries and Paris also blamed Bucharest for influencing the development of French companies on the romanian market. From a mechanism point of view, Romania claims to comply with Schengen rules. But these rules seem to be too flexible and influenced by the internal politics of the other countries that look for their own interest. And Romania seem to have learned the lesson.
However, this time France and Germany were more prudent (maybe to protect their business) and proposed a 2-step entry for Romania into Schengen while Netherlands expressed their rejection and now they have to support the consequences. Practically Nederland took over and replaced France now to enroll an economic battle. Unfortunately the Dutch businessmen have to suffer and not only Romania should be blamed but also the Dutch government because did not predict the outcome of their decision.
Dutch MEPs speak about blackmail
Blocking the transport of flowers and seeds at the border between Hungary and Romania is a form of “blackmail”, say many Dutch MEPs.
Although Romanian authorities say a bacteria was detected in flowers and seeds from the Netherlands, the Dutch Christian Democrats MEPs became suspicious when these measures were taken.
Dutch MEPs have demanded explanations about this situation from the Common Market EU Commissioner, Michel Barnier. A spokesman for the association of flower producers in the Netherlands said that “there is no bacteria present.” Last year, exports to Romania of Dutch bulbs amounted to 700,000 euros.
Netherlands will be opposed even partial accession of Romania and Bulgaria to Schengen, a spokeswoman for the Dutch Minister of Immigration said on Friday. “The government has decided to oppose the entry of Romania and Bulgaria,” said Elaine de Boer, a spokeswoman for Gerd Leers. Finland has just allied with the Netherlands.
France and Germany are more on pending.
France and Germany do not oppose -like the Netherlands and Finland-, to a compromise of a two-stage Schengen integration for Romania and Bulgaria, according to some European diplomats, the daily Kurier Austria announced.
A meeting of EU interior ministers is planned to take place in Brussels on Thursday. During this meeting there will be discussed a compromise draft of the Polish EU Presidency, which continues the 2-stage integration option already proposed in Spring 2011.
