Falcon Autumn 2011 is a military training event that takes place these days in the Netherlands (scroll down for video).

Four Apache attack helicopters were floating like angry wasps in the air. Inside the TT circuit in Assen dozens of troops deploy while machine gun fire sound from all over. Chinook transport helicopters bring more troops. A few kilometers from the circuit a Hercules transport plane drops about 40 paratroopers.

A few hours later, the Airmobile Brigade conquered the TT circuit in a combined attack on the ground and by air. The spectacular operation took place as part of Falcon Autumn, the largest military exercise in the Netherlands in the past 15 years. In today’s scenario the TT-circuit was regarded as imaginary airport, which is seized by insurgents. Several hundreds spectators attended the exciting action.

Falcon Autumn gathered over 3000 soldiers, 400 military vehicles, combat and transport helicopters and Hercules C130 transport aircrafts. It is the first appearance of the entire Air Brigade over years. A joint operation was previously not possible due to operations abroad. The attack at the TT circuit was called Air Assault. “This is a very complex but realistic scenario, since ground troops and helicopter units worked together,” said a spokesman for Netherlands Defence.

The special feature of these operations is that residents can participate. “We will actively seek contact with citizens,” said Defence Spokesman. “That should not be surprising if a heavily armed patrol shows up at the market.” The public can also participate in checkpoints set in central and northern Drenthe. Soldiers inspect cars there. “We practice like we have an operation in Uruzgan.”

Falcon Autumn lasts until Friday, October 7
